Introduction to Pickleball

SLN will provide the nets, paddles (limited quantity), and balls, as well as an explanation of the rules and coaching. All for free. At the same time, SLN will host an ice cream social courtside. There will be plenty of free refreshments for everyone -- players and observers.

About the event
Despite its funny name, pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America today. (Forty to sixty people play every morning at Maggie Daley Park.)Pickleball is similar to tennis but played on a smaller court, using a solid paddle and a plastic whiffle ball.

P.S. Why is it called pickleball?
A pickle boat is usually made up of leftover oarsmen from other rowing teams. One of the inventors of this new game remarked how the sport was made up of the parts of other sports, including tennis, ping-pong, badminton and volleyball. Gradually the inventors started calling the game “pickleball” -- and the name stuck.
